Afternoon

Heat, not quite stifling.
Drip, drip.
The air is heavy
Even the bird
Stops for lack of lifting
Undercurrent.
Dense hours -
Work is done and life
Laughs inside cool houses.
Suddenly it breaks
Flash
Down crashing pebbles, icy.
And twilight silence.
